What is bear spray, or bear deterrent?
So, what is bear spray? It is a form of pepper spray used to ward off aggressive bears, and is definitely a must have RV accessory for any adventurous person! According to Wikipedia, Smith et al. found that bear spray stopped a bear’s “undesirable behavior” in 92% of cases. Further, 98% of persons using bear spray in close-range encounters escaped uninjured.[1]
Sounds like good odds to me!
The Counter Assault Bear Deterrent contains 2% capsaicin which is the hottest formula allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency. At 10.2 oz., this can will give you 9.2 seconds of spray time, up to 32 ft, which is 3 seconds more than what was used in the Wikipedia survey previously mentioned.
Another great feature of the Counter Assault Bear Deterrent is that it comes with a durable nylon holster and belt loop. It also includes a safety cap that will stop you from unintentional spraying, as well as a glow-in-the-dark safety tie so that you don’t lose the safety mechanism at night.
For the curious, bear deterrent (bear spray) is legal in all 50 states, so you don’t need to worry about keeping it in your RV, 5th wheel, or travel trailer when crossing state lines or even trekking through Canada. Please note, however, that bear spray is illegal in some national parks. Be sure to check the local park rules before packing it for your hike.
